Singapore safe-haven appeal draws record wealth inflows amid Middle East volatility. Around 70% of wealth managers surveyed by Bloomberg expect Singapore to benefit most from the ongoing Middle East war, with approximately 1,300 new family offices expected to be set up between 2024 and 2026; S$77 billion in new money was poured into OCBC, DBS, and UOB in 2025 alone. This comes against the backdrop of MAS tightening its monetary policy earlier this month, raising core and headline inflation forecasts for 2026 to 1.5–2.5%, up from 1.0–2.0% previously, as energy cost pass-throughs widen following Strait of Hormuz disruptions. DPM Gan warns Hormuz disruption is a “systemic shock” to global trade. Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, speaking at the Singapore Maritime Lecture on 21 April, said mixed US-Iran signals over Hormuz passage reflect the continued volatility of the West Asia conflict, calling the disruption “a systemic shock” that transmits rapidly across the global economy via energy prices, transport costs, and supply chains. Separately, Singapore also announced a new national emergency alert system: SG Alert, launching via Singtel’s network from May 2026, will send pop-up notifications overriding silent mode, covering major fires, chemical incidents, and terror threats — with no opt-out permitted. URA hands out heavy fines over destruction of conserved Little India shophouse. A shophouse owner and his company were fined S$250,000 and S$150,000 respectively after carrying out unauthorised renovation works on a more than century-old conserved shophouse at 32 Desker Road, demolishing original architectural features including the rear facade and timber casement windows; URA said the heritage loss was irreversible. On the maritime infrastructure front, the Strait of Malacca is drawing heightened scrutiny as Hormuz tensions raise congestion and security risks for one of Asia’s busiest shipping corridors.
